Competitive Salaries (2001 Briefing Paper #2)

THE TREND
  •  In comparing average faculty salaries, WSU ranks 22 of out a list of 23 comparable institutions nationwide.  The list includes institutions similar to WSU with programs in liberal arts, agriculture, engineering, and veterinary medicine.

  • WSU pays $10,000 less than the average salaries of our competing universities.

  • We are losing faculty to comparable universities.  Many departing faculty members were dedicated WSU scholars who liked living in Washington and wanted to stay.  Characteristically, one faculty member described his decision to leave as "a tortured process." Not only are we losing the established superstars, but faculty at all levels.
