About 250 4-H youth from across the state informed legislators, Governor Gary Locke, and Superintendent of Public Instruction
Terry Bergeson that they were celebrating the Washington State University 4-H
Centennial by pledging 2.6 million hours of community service.
Governor Gary Locke spoke to the breakfast celebration at
the West Coast Olympia Hotel, unveiling his unusual proclamation that 2002 would
be marked at the “Year of 4-H.” Locke noted that he recalled no other
gubernatorial proclamation that marked an entire year for an organization.
Usually a day, week or month is set aside.
4-H members presented the governor with large baskets of
pledge cards that promised 2.6 million volunteer hours from youth in the
organization during this year.
Locke praised the 4-H organization for “hundreds of
thousands of lives touched and improved” during its first century in the state.

Guests of the celebration received a small teddy bear in the
4-H green color. Press the bear and it played a four-leaf clover tune. Each bear wore a Washington State University Cougar logo on
the right shoulder and the 4-H logo over the heart.
WSU 4-H youth from all across the state shared breakfast with
legislators. Seating was organized by legislative districts. Legislators
had pictures taken with 4-H members from their own legislative districts
before going on to their morning legislative hearings. |
| The event attracted legislators representing districts
across the state. Senate Transportation Chair Mary Margaret Haugen, D-Camano
Island; Senate Republican Whip Jim Honeyford, R-Sunnyside; Senate Higher
Education Vice Chair Paull Shinn, D-Mukilteo; Senate Republican Leader Jim
West, R-Spokane; Rep. Barry Shelin, the ranking Appropriations member from Oak
Harbor, and Rep. Cathy McMorris, the ranking State Government Committee Member
from Colville were just among a few of those on hand to honor 4-H. |
