Governor signs 2009-11 operating budget

A biennial operating budget that reduces WSU state funding by $54.2 million and assumes undergraduate tuition increases at 14 percent per year was signed into law today by Gov. Christine Gregoire.

A biennial capital budget authorizing nearly $196.8 million in WSU construction was signed this afternoon by Gov. Christine Gregoire -- accelerating four new WSU science building projects at three campuses.

Facing the deepest higher education cuts in state history, Washington State University is joining Gov. Christine Gregoire in supporting the Senate funding level for higher education institutions and in providing flexibility to raise tuition up to 14 percent per year.

Senate funds WSU Vancouver Applied Technology Classroom Building

Construction will be underway this summer on a $43.5 million Vancouver technology building and a $35 million WSU Pullman Global Animal Health building  if the capital construction budget proposed by Senate leadership today passes. The total House budget for WSU is $58.1 million. The Senate budget is $115.7 million.

Washington State University will lose $151.4 million of its current state funding base - 29 percent of its state funding - under a proposed 2009-2011 House budget announced today.

House Budget Cuts

Senate proposes 20 percent budget cut.

The Senate's proposed budget cuts for WSU announced today compares with a 12 percent reduction announced by the governor last December. The proposed Senate cut totals $104.3 million for the two-year budget cycle.
